Punishment is sensitive to outside options in humans, but not cleaner fish

A new article in Animal Behaviour revealed differences in the way humans and cleaner wrasses decide on punishments for cheating. While human subjects in the study tracked both the outcome of and the choice behind a harmful action, cleaner wrasses only tracked the outcome; they punished individuals that had no choice but to cheat in the same manner as those who did have a choice.
